North Camp Wingfield Information

North Camp Wingfield is a small area associated with the former Wingfield Aerodrome precinct in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, located near Goodwood, Maitland and the N1 corridor. Once an important aviation and military site, the area played a significant role in Cape Town’s transport and defence history. Established in the early 20th century, Wingfield Aerodrome served as a key airfield before the development of Cape Town International Airport, and it was particularly important during the Second World War when it supported military aviation activities.

Today, the surrounding area is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial development, with convenient access to many of Cape Town’s attractions. Aviation enthusiasts can explore the nearby South African Air Force Museum, which preserves a fascinating collection of aircraft and memorabilia reflecting South Africa’s flying heritage.

Visitors are also within easy reach of GrandWest, offering restaurants, entertainment and family activities, while the Tygerberg Nature Reserve provides scenic hiking trails and panoramic views across the city. The Durbanville Wine Valley, with its vineyards and award-winning estates, is also a short drive away.

Although North Camp Wingfield is not a traditional tourist destination, its aviation history and strategic location make it an interesting stop for those exploring Cape Town’s northern suburbs and heritage sites.
