Suggestions for things to see or do in and around the Bloubergstrand area:
-
Walk along Bloubergstrand Beach – The broad sandy beach is the obvious starting point, offering superb views across Table Bay towards Table Mountain. It is ideal for a stroll, beachcombing, photography or simply watching the ever-changing light over the mountain. Bloubergstrand Beach
-
Explore Big Bay – Just north of central Bloubergstrand, Big Bay is one of the area's most popular stretches of coastline. Come for a long beach walk, watch surfers and kitesurfers, or enjoy the spectacular sunsets. Big Bay Cape Town
-
Visit Blaauwberg Nature Reserve – This extensive coastal reserve protects an impressive variety of Cape flora and fauna, including endangered vegetation types. Walking trails provide opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife spotting and enjoying views across the coast. Blaauwberg Nature Reserve
-
Try kitesurfing – Blouberg is internationally recognised for its wind and has become one of Cape Town's great kitesurfing destinations. Beginners can take lessons, while experienced riders can head straight onto the water when conditions are favourable.
-
Learn to surf – The coastline around Blouberg and Table View provides opportunities for surfing, with local schools offering lessons for beginners. It is a fun way to experience the Atlantic, although the water is decidedly chilly!
-
Visit Small Bay – Also known as Little Bay, this quieter section of the coast has a more intimate atmosphere than Big Bay. Small Bay Beach Bloubergstrand The grassy areas, beach and nearby rock pools make it particularly pleasant for families and relaxed seaside outings.
-
Explore the Eerste Steen area – At the northern end of the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, Eerste Steen combines a coastal setting with picnic and braai facilities. It is a good place to spend a few hours outdoors while appreciating the area's indigenous landscape.
-
Go windsurfing – The famous Blouberg wind is not only for kiteboarders. Windsurfing has a long association with the area, and watching experienced sailors skim across Table Bay can be almost as entertaining as taking part yourself.
-
Discover the Blaauwberg coastline by bicycle – The relatively flat roads and beachfront sections around Blouberg, Table View and Big Bay make the area enjoyable to explore on two wheels. A leisurely cycle can take in beaches, parks, residential areas and dramatic coastal viewpoints.
-
Photograph the Table Mountain panorama – Few places offer such a classic view of Cape Town's most famous landmark. The combination of Table Mountain, Table Bay, Robben Island and the Atlantic makes Bloubergstrand particularly rewarding for photographers, especially around sunrise or sunset. The area also has historical significance: the Battle of Blaauwberg was fought here in 1806, when British forces defeated the Cape's Dutch colonial government.
