Onrus Information
Onrusrivier, usually known simply as Onrus, is a small seaside village on the Whale Coast of the Western Cape, just a few kilometres from Hermanus. With its relaxed atmosphere, sandy beaches, tidal pools and mountain-backed setting, it makes an appealing stop for visitors exploring the Overberg.
The name Onrus comes from the Afrikaans words meaning “unrest” or “restless”, a reference to the energetic movement of the sea along this stretch of coastline. The village lies at the mouth of the Onrus River, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. The river and its lagoon-like estuary provide a scenic focal point, while the surrounding fynbos-covered hills add to the area's natural character.
Onrus Beach is the main attraction, with a broad sandy shoreline that is popular for swimming, paddling, beach walks and family outings. The protected Onrus River mouth is particularly attractive for children and for those wanting to enjoy the water without the full force of the ocean. 2 Tidal pools, Jan Rabie Tidal Pool and Davies' Tidal Pool provide another options for swimming, while the rocks and shoreline are good places to explore marine life at low tide.
The village is also well placed for enjoying the wider attractions of the Whale Coast. Hermanus, famous for its land-based whale watching, is only a short drive away, while nearby Vermont and Hawston offer further coastal scenery and walking opportunities. During whale season, southern right whales can sometimes be seen from the shoreline around Onrus, adding another dimension to a visit.
