Voelklip Information

Voelklip is a scenic coastal suburb on the eastern side of Hermanus in the Overberg, known for its beaches, rocky shoreline, mountain scenery and excellent access to the natural attractions of Walker Bay. The name means “bird rock” in Afrikaans, an appropriate description for a coastal area where seabirds are commonly seen around the rocks and cliffs.

The suburb is particularly popular with beachgoers. Grotto Beach is the main attraction, a long stretch of sandy coastline backed by dunes and overlooked by the Klein River Mountains. It is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, walking and family outings, while the wide beach makes it a favourite spot for an early-morning or late-afternoon stroll. During the whale season, usually from winter into spring, the coastline can also provide opportunities for spotting southern right whales in Walker Bay.

Voëlklip Beach and Kammabaai Beach are smaller and more sheltered, with rocky areas and attractive views across the bay. Kammabaai is popular with surfers when conditions are suitable, while the surrounding coastline is well suited to photography, coastal walks and exploring rock pools. Langbaai is another secluded beach tucked between rocky headlands and is particularly appealing to visitors looking for a quieter seaside experience.

The area has strong connections with Hermanus's development as a seaside holiday destination. Hermanus grew from a small fishing and farming community into one of the Cape's best-known coastal resorts, and Voëlklip became increasingly popular as residential and holiday development spread eastwards along the coast. Its location also places it close to the famous Hermanus Cliff Path, which runs for many kilometres along the shoreline and is regarded as one of the best places for land-based whale watching.

Outdoor activities are the main attraction. Visitors can swim, surf, walk, hike, watch whales, explore rock pools, photograph the coastline and enjoy picnics on or near the beaches. The nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve adds another dimension, with hiking trails leading into the Klein River Mountains through exceptionally rich fynbos.

Voëlklip is a good choice for travellers who want to experience the natural side of Hermanus while remaining close to the town's shops, galleries, restaurants and other attractions. Its combination of beaches, mountain scenery, fynbos and whale-rich waters makes it one of the area's most attractive coastal neighbourhoods.
