Reitz Information

Reitz is a small agricultural town in the eastern Free State, surrounded by wide fields, grazing country and the gently undulating landscapes of the Highveld. Its quiet streets and traditional country-town atmosphere make it an appealing stop for travellers exploring the province’s farming heartland.

The town was established in 1889 and named after Francis William Reitz, who served as president of the Orange Free State from 1889 to 1895. Reitz developed as an agricultural service centre, and farming remains central to the surrounding district, with grain production and livestock among the main activities.

The town itself is best explored at an unhurried pace. Visitors can admire its older churches and buildings, which reflect its late nineteenth-century origins, while the surrounding countryside offers opportunities for scenic drives, photography and birdwatching. The open landscape changes character with the seasons, from vibrant green after the summer rains to the rich golden tones of the winter veld.

Reitz also makes a useful base for exploring nearby farming communities and the wider eastern Free State. Travellers interested in local history can look for traces of the area's early settlement and agricultural development, while those simply passing through can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and expansive views that characterise the district.

Within the Northern & Eastern Free State Region, Reitz offers a straightforward introduction to the province's rural character. It is not a destination built around major tourist attractions, but its appeal lies in its history, agricultural heritage and the opportunity to experience the spacious landscapes and relaxed pace of a traditional Free State country town.
