Bordeaux Information
Bordeaux is a leafy residential suburb in Randburg, north of Johannesburg's city centre, characterised by quiet streets, mature gardens and a relaxed suburban atmosphere. Its convenient position places residents and visitors within easy reach of Randburg, Sandton and several of Johannesburg's popular shopping and entertainment districts.
The name Bordeaux comes from the famous French city and wine-producing region of the same name. Like a number of Johannesburg suburbs, it reflects the European influence found in local place names, although the exact circumstances behind the suburb's naming are not particularly well documented.
Bordeaux is primarily residential, but its location makes it a useful base for exploring nearby attractions. The Randburg and Ferndale areas offer a variety of cafés, restaurants and independent businesses, while Cresta Shopping Centre provides extensive retail and dining options.
Nature lovers can escape the urban surroundings at Delta Park, one of Johannesburg's most attractive open spaces. Its grasslands, wetlands and wooded areas support a surprising variety of birdlife, and the park's walking trails offer a peaceful setting for a morning stroll or picnic. Further south, the Johannesburg Botanical Garden at Emmarentia provides landscaped gardens, lakes and broad lawns, with the surrounding parks popular for walking, cycling and recreational activities.
The suburb is also within easy reach of Northcliff Ridge, where one of Johannesburg's most impressive viewpoints overlooks the sprawling city. The ridge is particularly attractive at sunset, when the Highveld landscape and distant skyline take on warm colours.
Bordeaux lies in the Johannesburg region of Gauteng, in an area shaped by the city's rapid suburban growth during the 20th century. Despite its urban surroundings, mature trees and pockets of open land retain something of the character of the former Highveld landscape.
For travellers, Bordeaux offers a quiet suburban base rather than a destination centred on major landmarks. Its proximity to parks, shopping, restaurants and Johannesburg's northern attractions makes it a practical and pleasant place from which to explore the city.
