Interesting things about the Hermanus Golf Club:
A long history: The club was founded in 1907, when ten local residents got together to establish a golf club. The original annual subscription was just five shillings.
It originally had only nine holes: The first course was laid out on the Hermanus commonage. The present site dates from the early 1920s, and the course was extended to 18 holes in 1937.
A royal connection: The clubhouse opened in 1923 and was officially opened by Prince Arthur of Connaught, then Governor-General of South Africa.
A quirky bit of golf history: The early artificial greens were top-dressed with seashells, while fences were erected around the greens to keep wandering donkeys, sheep and cattle out.
It is now a 27-hole course: A major redevelopment in 2006–2007 added nine holes designed by renowned South African golf architect Peter Matkovich, creating three nine-hole loops.
The natural setting is a major attraction: The course sits below the Kleinrivier Mountains and incorporates indigenous fynbos and wetlands, with some holes offering views towards Walker Bay. The club has also undertaken significant wetland restoration, including protecting about 11 hectares as conservation areas.
You may see wildlife: The course's fynbos and wetlands support birdlife and other wildlife, and a troop of baboons is a particularly unusual feature.
Famous golfers have played there: Historic visitors have included Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Sam Snead, Dai Rees and Bobby Cole.
