Van Zylsrus Information

Van Zylsrus is a tiny oasis of civilisation in the red sands of the Kalahari, surrounded by camel-thorn trees, rolling dunes and wide-open skies. Its remote setting and distinctive character make it a rewarding stop for travellers seeking solitude, wildlife and a genuine taste of the northern Cape bush.

The settlement was established in the early 1930s by Jacobus Johannes “Koos” van Zyl, a farmer who recognised the value of a reliable water source in this exceptionally dry country. The name combines his surname with “rus”, Afrikaans for “rest”, giving Van Zylsrus the evocative meaning “Van Zyl’s Rest”. The original water point provided a welcome stopping place for people travelling through the Kalahari, and the settlement gradually grew around it.

Today, the town is surrounded by some of the most characteristic scenery of the Kalahari. Red sand, silver-grey grass and twisted camel-thorn trees stretch towards distant horizons, while the lack of large-scale development creates a powerful sense of wilderness. Game drives and guided excursions on surrounding farms offer opportunities to see gemsbok, springbok, kudu and other wildlife adapted to the dry environment.

Van Zylsrus is particularly well known among travellers for its relaxed atmosphere and quirky hospitality. The Kalahari Arms Hotel has become something of an institution, offering a memorable place to eat, stay and meet fellow travellers. Its rustic character fits perfectly with the surrounding landscape and has helped give the settlement a reputation as an atmospheric stopover on the road through the Kalahari.

The area is also excellent for birdwatching and photography. Early mornings and late afternoons bring the best light, turning the dunes and thornveld into rich shades of red and gold. After sunset, the exceptionally clear skies reveal an impressive display of stars, making the region a superb destination for stargazing.

Van Zylsrus lies within the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, close to the Botswana border and the vast wilderness of the Kalahari. Its appeal is not found in a long list of attractions, but in its remoteness, scenery and distinctive sense of place. For travellers willing to take the long road, Van Zylsrus offers a memorable chance to slow down, breathe in the dry Kalahari air and experience the extraordinary beauty of South Africa’s northern interior.
