Noupoort Information

Noupoort is a small railway town surrounded by the vast, rugged landscapes of the central Karoo, where seemingly endless plains meet low hills beneath brilliant blue skies. Its remote setting and important railway history give it a distinctive character, making it a worthwhile stop for travellers exploring the Northern Cape.

The name Noupoort is Afrikaans for “narrow pass”, a reference to the natural gap through the surrounding hills. The settlement developed on the farm Hartebeesthoek during the late 19th century, when the expanding railway network transformed isolated parts of the interior. Noupoort became an important junction on the railway linking the Cape with the interior, and the arrival of the railway brought workers, businesses and new opportunities to the settlement.

The railway remains central to Noupoort’s identity. Although passenger services are far quieter than they were during the railway’s heyday, the tracks and associated infrastructure are reminders of the town’s former importance as a transport and supply point. During the Anglo-Boer War, the railway was also strategically significant, with British forces using the line to move troops and supplies through the Karoo.

Beyond its railway heritage, Noupoort is an excellent place to appreciate the stark beauty of the surrounding landscape. The hills and plains provide opportunities for scenic drives, photography and birdwatching, while the dry air and sparse population create superb conditions for viewing the night sky. After rainfall, the veld can change dramatically, with fresh grasses and seasonal flowers adding unexpected colour to the otherwise austere terrain.

The area around Noupoort is also associated with sheep farming, which remains an important part of the local economy. Travellers should allow time simply to take in the immense sense of space: this is a landscape where distant koppies, windmills and isolated farmsteads become landmarks.

In the Hantam Karoo & Upper Karoo Region, Noupoort offers an unpretentious encounter with the Northern Cape’s railway heritage and remarkable semi-desert scenery, best experienced as part of a leisurely road journey through the heart of the Karoo.
