Loxton Information

Loxton is a small Karoo town with a surprisingly rich sense of character, where whitewashed buildings, old windmills and broad, dry plains create an atmosphere of timeless rural South Africa. Quiet streets and wide-open spaces make it an appealing stop for travellers looking to experience the slower side of the Northern Cape.

The town was established in 1899 on the farm Phezantfontein, which belonged to Scottish-born farmer Sir James Rose Innes, later a prominent South African judge and politician. Loxton was named after George Loxton, the British colonial secretary of the Cape Colony at the time. The settlement developed as a service centre for the surrounding sheep-farming community and was formally proclaimed a town in 1905.

Loxton’s historic architecture is one of its greatest attractions. The Dutch Reformed Church, completed in the early 20th century, stands prominently in the centre, while a number of old Karoo homes preserve the traditional combination of thick walls, high ceilings and shaded verandas designed to cope with the region’s extreme temperatures. A stroll through town offers glimpses of an earlier era when horse-drawn wagons and dusty roads were central to everyday life.

Water has always been crucial here, and the old windmills scattered across the landscape are a reminder of the ingenuity required to make farming possible in such an arid environment. Visitors can also explore the surrounding farms and gravel roads, where the stark beauty of the Karoo is particularly rewarding at sunrise and sunset.

For nature lovers, the area provides opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting, while the exceptionally clear skies make the district well suited to stargazing. After summer rainfall, the veld can undergo a remarkable transformation as grasses and wildflowers briefly bring colour to the landscape.

In the Hantam Karoo & Upper Karoo Region, Loxton offers an authentic taste of the central Karoo: peaceful, spacious and steeped in the practical traditions of farming life. It is a destination best enjoyed slowly, with time to admire its architecture, landscape and wonderfully expansive skies.
