Kleinzee Information

Kleinzee is a remote former mining settlement on the Atlantic coast of the Northern Cape, where the harsh beauty of the Namib Desert meets the cold Benguela Current. Its windswept beaches, rugged coastline and extraordinary diamond-mining history give it a character unlike almost anywhere else in South Africa.

The name Kleinzee is Afrikaans for “Little Sea”, referring to its position beside the Atlantic Ocean. The settlement developed in the early 20th century after diamonds were discovered along the Namaqualand coast. Mining eventually transformed Kleinzee into a company town, with housing, shops, recreational facilities and other infrastructure established for mine workers and their families.

For decades, diamond mining dominated life here. The surrounding coastline was intensively worked for alluvial diamonds, with enormous areas of land reshaped by mining operations. Although commercial mining has declined dramatically, the distinctive piles of excavated earth and altered coastal terrain remain visible reminders of the industry that once made Kleinzee a prosperous and highly controlled community.

Today, the town’s greatest attraction is its remote coastal setting. Long beaches, rocky headlands and powerful Atlantic surf create excellent opportunities for photography, beachcombing and exploring the shoreline. The cold offshore waters support marine life, while seals and seabirds can often be spotted along the coast. During the whale season, the possibility of seeing whales offshore adds another reason to keep an eye on the horizon.

The surrounding landscape is part of the Succulent Karoo, one of the world’s most botanically diverse arid regions. The seemingly barren ground is home to an astonishing variety of succulents and other specialised plants. After winter rain, the wider Namaqualand landscape can burst into colour, although Kleinzee’s immediate coastal environment is often considerably more austere.

Kleinzee lies in the Namaqualand Region, north of Springbok and close to the Namibian border. Its isolation is a major part of its appeal, with long distances and limited services reinforcing the feeling of being at the edge of the country.

For adventurous travellers, Kleinzee offers a fascinating blend of desert, ocean and industrial history. Walking along its windswept shore, exploring the remnants of the mining era and watching the sun sink over the Atlantic provide a powerful reminder of how people have sought opportunity in even the most challenging corners of the Northern Cape.
