Burgerville Information

Burgerville is one of the Northern Cape’s intriguing forgotten settlements, a place where little now remains but the story of a community that once dreamed of becoming a thriving Karoo town. Situated along the N10 between De Aar and Hanover, it is a fascinating detour for travellers drawn to ghost towns, pioneer history and the quiet beauty of the interior.

The settlement was laid out on 25 January 1879 on the farm Zevenfontein. The land had been divided into portions, with the section on which Burgerville was established belonging to J. Viljoen. The new village was named after Barend Burger, whose name became permanently linked with the fledgling community. A syndicate was formed to develop the town, plots were surveyed and sold, and houses, gardens and trees soon appeared. Around 30 families settled here, and a school was established as the community took shape.

Burgerville was fuelled by optimism. Rumours circulated that diamonds had been found nearby and that factories might eventually be established, raising hopes that the settlement could become an important regional centre. Such expectations proved unfounded, however, and the anticipated boom never materialised. The settlement gradually declined until Burgerville became a ghost town, leaving the surrounding Karoo to reclaim its traces.

Today, the attraction lies largely in the atmosphere and the story. Travellers exploring the Hantam Karoo & Upper Karoo Region can pause to contemplate how ambitious plans once took root in this seemingly endless landscape. The surrounding countryside, with its sparse vegetation, rugged plains and enormous skies, is quintessential Karoo and makes the journey worthwhile in its own right.

Burgerville is not a destination for a long list of conventional attractions; instead, it appeals to those who enjoy uncovering the stories behind forgotten places. Its rise and disappearance offer a poignant reminder of how dependent early settlements were on water, transport, commerce and the fortunes of the surrounding countryside.
