Allanridge Information

Allanridge is a small Free State town with a story written deep into the gold-bearing rock beneath its streets. Established in 1947 and proclaimed a town in 1956, it grew around the Loraine Gold Mine and became part of the province’s remarkable post-war gold-mining boom. The town was named after Allan Roberts, a pioneer prospector whose work helped establish the area’s mining potential.

For visitors interested in industrial and mining history, Allanridge offers a glimpse into the communities that sprang up alongside the Free State goldfields. The headgear and remnants of the Loraine mining complex remain distinctive landmarks, while an old mine locomotive, known as Paulina, recalls the days when locomotives hauled gold-bearing ore between the mine’s shafts and processing works.

One of the more intriguing historical stories lies just outside town at Aandenk, where early prospectors investigated the possibility of gold beneath the surrounding plains. The pioneering exploration helped pave the way for the development of the Goldfields and ultimately the establishment of Allanridge itself.

Nature provides a gentler attraction, with the area noted for its flocks of flamingos, which add a splash of colour to the open landscape. Allanridge and nearby Nyakallong offer an opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Transgariep & Goldfields Region, where mining heritage, wide Free State skies and small-town life come together.
