Stampriet Information

Stampriet is a small, welcoming settlement in southern Namibia, set among dry plains and red Kalahari sands about 65 kilometres north-east of Mariental. Its location beside the Auob River gives it a surprisingly green character, with irrigated gardens and tall trees providing a refreshing contrast to the surrounding semi-desert.

The town’s name has German origins. It was originally known as Stamspruit, after the nearby river, with ‘spruit’ referring to a small stream or watercourse. The name was later adapted to Stampriet during the German colonial period. Long before the modern settlement developed, the area’s underground water and seasonal river supported communities and livestock in an otherwise challenging environment.

Stampriet’s history is closely linked to farming and the search for reliable water in southern Namibia. The town grew as an agricultural centre, benefiting from underground aquifers that make it possible to cultivate crops and maintain livestock. Today, its gardens and orchards are a pleasant reminder of the importance of groundwater in the region.

For visitors, Stampriet is less about major attractions than experiencing rural Namibian life and the landscape around it. The surrounding Kalahari country is ideal for scenic drives, birdwatching and wildlife viewing, with springbok, gemsbok and other hardy species adapted to the dry conditions. The nearby Auob River corridor provides a natural focus for birdlife, while the red dunes and thornveld become particularly beautiful in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon.

The area is also well suited to stargazing. With little artificial light and exceptionally clear skies, the southern Namibian night can reveal an impressive sweep of stars and the Milky Way.

Situated in the Hardap Region, Stampriet makes a convenient stop between Mariental and the southern Kalahari, particularly for travellers interested in experiencing Namibia away from its major tourist attractions. Its combination of water, farming heritage and distinctive Kalahari scenery gives this quiet settlement a character all its own.
