Rudhiva Information

Rudhiva is a small settlement on the southern bank of the Okavango River in north-eastern Namibia, surrounded by lush riverine vegetation, sandy woodland and fertile floodplains. Situated in a remote part of the country, it offers an intimate glimpse of rural Kavango life and the remarkable natural environment sustained by the river.

The settlement was formerly known as Shadikongoro, but in 2010 the Hambukushu Traditional Authority called for the original name, Rudhiva, to be restored. The traditional authority stated that Rudhiva was the village’s original name and that Shadikongoro had no particular meaning. The name is therefore closely tied to local Hambukushu heritage and the community’s traditional identity.

Rudhiva’s greatest attraction is its setting beside the Okavango. Fishing is an important part of life, while the river and surrounding wetlands support abundant birdlife. Kingfishers, herons, bee-eaters and African fish eagles may be seen along the waterways, while hippos and crocodiles inhabit parts of the river. Anyone exploring the water should use local knowledge and take appropriate precautions.

The surrounding countryside is a mixture of woodland, grassland and seasonal wetlands, creating habitat for antelope, elephants and numerous smaller animals. The landscape becomes particularly vibrant after the rains, when fresh grasses and vegetation transform the sandy terrain.

Rudhiva lies in the Kavango Region, in an area where the river has shaped both settlement and culture for generations. Traditional fishing, farming and community life remain closely connected to the seasonal rhythms of the Okavango.

There are few conventional tourist attractions here, but that is precisely what makes Rudhiva interesting. For adventurous travellers exploring the Kavango, it offers an opportunity to experience a quieter, less developed side of Namibia, where the landscape, local traditions and enduring presence of the river are the main attractions.
