Koes Information
Koes is a tiny settlement in southern Namibia, surrounded by dry plains, rocky hills and the characteristic thornveld of the country’s remote interior. Far from Namibia’s major tourist centres, it offers a peaceful glimpse of rural life in a landscape where livestock farming, scarce water and long distances have shaped communities for generations.
The name Koes is believed to have Nama origins, although its precise meaning is not certain. The settlement developed as a farming community in the dry south, with livestock owners relying on natural grazing and precious groundwater. Its location near the Kalahari landscape gives the surrounding countryside a subtly different character from the stark, rocky desert farther west.
Koes is not a destination filled with conventional attractions, but its surroundings reward travellers who appreciate open spaces and solitude. The countryside is characterised by sandy plains, thorn trees and low rocky ridges, creating excellent scenery for scenic drives and photography. After seasonal rains, the landscape can undergo a remarkable transformation as grasses and flowering plants appear across the plains.
Wildlife is well adapted to the harsh conditions. Springbok, gemsbok, ostrich and kudu may be seen in the wider area, while smaller animals such as jackals and bat-eared foxes are sometimes encountered around the edges of the settlement. Birdwatching can be particularly rewarding near water sources, especially after rainfall.
The surrounding Kalahari country also offers superb opportunities for stargazing. With very little artificial light, the night sky is exceptionally clear, and the Milky Way can appear as a brilliant band stretching across the darkness. For photographers, the warm colours of the landscape at dawn and dusk provide equally memorable subjects.
Situated in the Karas Region, Koes is best suited to travellers exploring Namibia by road who are happy to venture away from the main tourist routes. Its attraction lies in its remoteness rather than a long list of sights: wide skies, quiet roads, hardy wildlife and a landscape that reveals its beauty slowly. A stop here provides an authentic taste of southern Namibia’s rural character and extraordinary sense of space.
