Katere Information

Katere is a small rural settlement in north-eastern Namibia, set within the sandy woodlands and seasonal wetlands of the Kavango. Far removed from the country’s better-known tourist attractions, it offers a glimpse of village life in a region where communities have traditionally depended on the Okavango River and the natural resources of the surrounding bushveld.

The name Katere is of local origin and is associated with the languages and traditions of the Kavango people. Its precise meaning is not widely documented, but like many place names in the area, it reflects an indigenous heritage that predates the colonial period. The settlement forms part of a wider network of villages whose lives have historically been shaped by farming, fishing and seasonal changes in water availability.

Although Katere has few formal tourist attractions, its rural surroundings provide opportunities for travellers interested in experiencing northern Namibia away from the main tourist routes. Locally arranged cultural visits can offer insight into traditional agriculture, fishing, food preparation and crafts. The Kavango is particularly noted for its woodcarving traditions, and meeting local artisans can provide a fascinating perspective on the region’s cultural heritage.

The natural environment is equally rewarding. Mopane and broad-leaved woodland provide habitat for antelope, elephants and numerous smaller species, while seasonal pans and floodplains attract birds when water is available. Kingfishers, rollers, hornbills, bee-eaters and other species can be seen, particularly during the wetter months. The changing landscape between the dry season and the rains can be dramatic, with dusty woodland giving way to fresh green growth.

The wider Okavango River system is the ecological heart of the area. Fishing, especially for species such as tigerfish, is an important activity in river communities, while boat excursions elsewhere along the river offer an opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife.

Katere lies in the Kavango Region, a part of Namibia where the contrast between sandy bushveld and lush waterways is especially striking. For adventurous travellers, the settlement is less about ticking off attractions and more about experiencing the everyday character of rural Namibia – quiet villages, open woodland, seasonal wetlands and a culture closely tied to the land and water.
