Gibeon Information

Gibeon is a small railway settlement in southern Namibia, surrounded by broad plains, dry riverbeds and the rugged beauty of the country’s semi-arid interior. Its quiet streets and modest buildings belie a history that reaches back to the 19th century, when the area became an important centre for the Nama people and later developed as a station along Namibia’s railway network.

The name Gibeon comes from the biblical town of Gibeon, while the settlement was established in an area associated with the Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi and his followers. The Witbooi community made Gibeon their home in the late 19th century, and the town remains closely connected with this important chapter in Namibian history. Hendrik Witbooi later became one of the country’s most prominent historical figures, remembered both for his resistance to German colonial rule and his leadership of the Nama people.

One of the most significant places to visit is the Gibeon railway station and its surrounding historic buildings, which recall the era when the railway connected Namibia’s interior with the coast and provided an essential route for people and goods. The town is also associated with the Gibeon meteorites, one of the world’s most remarkable meteorite showers. Pieces of the enormous iron meteorite fall are displayed in various locations across Namibia, with some forming part of the famous meteorite collection in Windhoek.

For travellers, Gibeon’s appeal lies as much in its surroundings as its history. The open landscape provides a strong sense of southern Namibia’s vastness, with dry plains, thornveld and distant mountains creating excellent opportunities for landscape photography. Wildlife adapted to the dry conditions can sometimes be spotted outside town.

Gibeon lies in the Hardap Region, roughly between Mariental and Keetmanshoop on the main railway and road route through southern Namibia. It makes a rewarding stop for travellers interested in Nama and colonial history, meteorites and the quieter side of Namibia’s fascinating interior.
